Asli Erdoğan is a prizewinning writer, human rights activist and columnist for Özgür Gündem. She has been arrested with more than 20 other journalists and staff members of the newspaper. Özgür Gündem, was founded in 1992, focused on the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. Last summer, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government used a state of emergency law to close the 29 publishing houses such as newspapers, television channels, magazines and news agencies.
