Researchers considered 24 vulnerabilities in four groups: protection of civil and political rights, social and economic health, personal security and refugee populations and from conflicts.
The analysis was conducted by analyzing the situation in 167 countries, by carrying out random checks and surveys sometimes at the state level (as in India) sometimes through interviews (42,000 in 53 different languages). Many the difficulties encountered: measure the number of people in the state of modern slavery is often very difficult because of the hidden nature of this crime and low levels of identification of victims.

About a quarter of new slaves are localized in 5 countries: India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan where they produce goods for Western Europe, Japan, North America and Australia markets.
The highest number of slaves lives in India (18 million), but if you look at the percentages of the total population and refers to the modern slavery to lead the ranking is the DPRK: according to the research, 4.37% of the population in the North Korean lives in slave-like conditions.

Since the last report, the number of slaves grew considerably (about 30%). In 2014, they were 35.8 million; now, according to the researchers of the Walk Free Foundation, it increased by more than ten millions.

Surprisingly no country is “free”. In the US live over 57 thousand slaves. And in Japan, according to the researchers, there would be 290 thousand (over 2 persons per thousand).
Lowest prevalence of modern slavery (referring to the population) was found in Luxembourg, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Belgium, the United States and Canada, and Australia and New Zealand.

In Europe, there are over a million and two hundred thousand “new slaves”. Despite having the lowest regional incidence of modern slavery in the world, this remains a problem in Europe. The worst situation is in Macedonia, the best occurs in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. But even in these countries the cases of slavery are not lacking. In Germany new slaves are 14500 (0.018 percent of the population), the same percentage in France and in the United Kingdom. Much worse the situation in Italy: according to Walk Free Foundation, there are almost 130 thousand slaves (0.02 of workers).

Modern slavery is influenced by several factors related to the presence or absence of protection and respect for the rights, physical safety and security, access to the necessities of life, such as food, water and health care, and patterns of migration, displacement and conflict.
