Face-O-Matic is an experimental, public service, developed by the Internet Archive’s TV News Archive in collaboration with Matroid.  Face-o-Matic tracks the faces of selected high level elected officials on major TV cable news channels: CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and the BBC. First launched as a Slack app in July 2017, the TV News Archive began making the underlying data available to the media, researchers, and the public in September 2017. Use these data to find, compare, and otherwise analyze coverage of public officials. Face-O-Matic is part of the TV News Archive’s experiments using tools of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, to generate metadata in our collection of 1.4 million TV news shows.

As of September 2017, we track four elected officials on TV news:
President Donald Trump
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R., Ky.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D., N.Y.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R., Wis.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D., Calif.”Results” files, updated nightly, contain Face-O-Matic results. They contain the following fields:
Label = standardized name
Name = name of person tracked
Network = TV news network
Program = name of program
Air Date = date program aired
Air Time = time program aired, UTC time zone
